Shyam Benegal has scored again. This time, with his first ever out-and-out comic film. The ace director, who has masterpieces like Sardari Begum and Zubeida to his name, has done an equally splendid job with Welcome to Sajjanpur. The film has opened to quite an encouraging response at the box office and has had critics singing its praises too. Naturally, its star cast, including lead actors Amrita Rao and Shreyas Talpade, stepped out to celebrate its red carpet premiere in style.
It was a relief too see Shreyas and Amrita minus their rural Sajjanpur get-up after a long time. While Shreyas wore urbanised traditional clothes to the event, Amrita looked resplendent in a chic white suit as she said, “Today I’m not the character, I’m the audience.” Besides, the cast, Celina Jaitley and Tusshar Kapoor also showed up in support of their Golmaal Returns co-star, Shreyas. Celina’s traditional look raised quite a few eyebrows. “I’ve come from Sajjanpur,” she laughed. Shabana Azmi and Javed Akhtar walked in looking mighty pleased with their favourite director. “When I saw the trailer, I knew I had to watch it first day, first show,” said Shabana, who’s done Benegal’s Mandi in the past. “He has a very good sense of humour,” said husband Javed, who penned the lyrics for Sardari Begum and Zubeida.
